Here is what I have so far for the astromech:

Name: Jowmum
Designation: R4-I1
Age: I was one of the early R4 units assembled.

Known Backstory:
-I think I was a Wookie uploaded into an R4 unit. When I booted up the first time, a couple of teens came told me I was a Wookie. They were a tad bit surprised when I couldn't remember anything. Shortly after I mastered all my motor skills, the lab I had existed in up until this point changed ownership and the equipment was auctioned off, myself included. The night before I was to go to my new home, I ran away. Not knowing anything about anything, I came back when I realized I wouldn't last long on the streets.

I ended up in the care of this well off family who had a young daughter who had <genetic condition>. The family had a collection this new R4 model, so they gave each one a speech synthesizer let each one pick its own name. I informed them I was to be called Jowmum as that was what I used to be called. Little Angie had a hoverchair I modified to plug into various vehicles we built together for her school's science fair races. One year we built a high-performance desert speeder. The fuel line burst during the approach to the finish line and we had a we ended up in a spectacular fireball instead of a third place trophy. We came out uncathed and a holorecording of the incident went viral. About half the planet saw it.

Another year, the challenge was to make a submarine with a stringent power budget. Angie's school had just had a Jedi come by her class and teach them about how light sabers work. She applied the looping energy principles used in the blade and made an energy shield for the hull that supersaturated the water. Second place took about four times as long to finish. The judges almost disqualified us on suspicion of cheating, but our sub was within all the guidelines.

We needed a bit more of a challenge after getting bored with winning the state wide junior races. Our crowning achievement was assembling a pod racer and entering it in the Boonta Classic. We came in eighth, but only because everyone behind us fell victim to a hazard or a cheatin' racer. We didn't stay on Tatooine long. I had heard roomers from the other droids that the last finisher was a traditional post-race target for the crashed racers.

The next year we worked on the pod and won a smaller race. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Angie's disorder flared up and she died that winter. She was 22 years old. She willed me to her uncle who owned a small freighter. He wasn't the most comfortable with calling me by my name, seeing as he had a long lasting grudge against a clan of Wookies that owed him money. He needed a droid to fix his occasional problem. For the most part he left me to wander the ship and study it. I made a few upgrades whenever I saw an opportunity, but my favorite thing to do was cruse the outer hull and star gaze while orbiting a planet. I hated it when someone blatantly called me by my raw designation.

While I served on that freighter, I had a lot of time to myself just to think. I thought about my place in the galaxy. I had never came across another droid who used to be a person. My mental functions were exceptional as far as droids went. At the same time, not all droids were created equal. A weak AI was a slave to its programming; an illusion of life at best. A strong AI system had to be more advanced, but even then, some droids could perfectly content just serving drinks and deactivating while not on duty. Others were more independent, like me.

One day during the Clone Wars, we were hauling junk between a couple of no-name dealers within a cluster. Among the wreckage was a fried slicer droid. He saw an investment opportunity and told me to repair it. The poor thing looked like it had taken some sort of blaster hit. I got most of it's parts working, but it's personality core was gone. The look on it's face, if it had been able to express anything got me wondering about who I was before I was now. That droid would be going through something similar to me when its destroyed core got replaced. I pitted it. <Freighter captain name> did make a reasonable extra profit, but he was a bit disappointed I didn't finish. As punishment, he traded me off to Isshbev, a black market information dealer who fit his Wookie stories perfectly, for an antique from Naboo.

While this new job gave me a chance to observe a member of my own species, he would have nothing to do with my "Games of being a 'real boy.'" He kept me in a server closet while I kept his file system organized. He had my voice synthesizer removed as, "R4's shouldn't speak." He ignored my talents with machines, saying he trusted his Lothal astromech more than some unproven *I don't want to say it* of a droid who takes too much time with projects. At one point he even stuck a funnel on my head with the word "FAIL" on it. He showed his friends and it eventually caught on as a way of punishment through humiliation, especially in schools. Eventually, he was treating me as little more than a thumb drive with wheels.

After a while, I had had enough. This guy was getting worse by the year. I ended up tipping off the empire that he was helping the rebels. They sent some elite fighters and the ship was about to blow, but his favorite second rate droid managed to fix the problem so we could get away. I locked the hatch so it couldn't get back in. I saw some of his parts floating away as we entered hyperspace. I did not report his passing.

A few days later, the rebels got a similar intell report and they landed a hit on some minor part. I decided the archives needed an emergency backup so I didn't notice when the automated repair order came up. When I came out of backing up his servers, I made my way to the only functional escape pod. The others were having their life support systems worked on. That poor bad master...

The rebels picked me up and this squad respected me enough to treat me as the slightly less than equal I saw myself as. I worked with them as opposed to for them. Some days it almost felt as if I was back with Angie. One of them even got me another voice synthesizer so my every word wasn't censored anymore. I spent some time with them honing my skills as a slicer, as they already had a plethora of talented mechanics and their main slicer tried to hack a small sewage port and now refused to even consider hacking anything ever again. The rebels made sure I knew what a computer port looked like so I wouldn't make a similar mistake.

-Being thought of as being less than <race> weather or not I was at one point.

Goals:
-I have always wondered who I was before I was uploaded. My investigations have always been hampered by one master or another, though.
-I want to return to my family if I ever find out who they were.

• First memory of booting up
o 2 teens tell me I am an uploaded human with amnesia.
 They kept me in the lab in secret, I learned all my various gismos and how to work them. When the land lord reclaimed the lab, I was just another piece of equipment to him. I was sold to some well off family.
• Ambassador’s family
o I was assigned to work with Angie, the rich couple’s daughter with an incurable genetic disorder. She had a custom, high tech hoverchair. Every year, we would design and build a new vehicle her chair could plug into and enter it into the annual race for science.
 One year we made a high performance desert speeder. The fuel line burst during the final lap and we had a spectacular fireball instead of a third place trophy. When we came out unscathed, the audience gave us a standing ovation. A holorecording of the incident went viral and about half the planet saw it.
 Another year, the challenge was to make a low power submarine. Angie’s school had just had a Jedi come and teach her class about how a light saber works and we applied the blade’s looping energy principles to the hull of the sub. We finished in a quarter of the time of second place.
o Angie taught me that friends don’t always need to understand each other to get along; I’ll never forget the time we went camping and a bird stole the wire for my portable text readout. It got me so frustrated when I understood her, but my every word was censored!
o Angie only lived to be 22 years old. She died due to complications with her genetic disorder.
• Average master
o My well off master died due to her condition, and I was passed on to a small freighter. It was here that I learned that droids were not just mechanical people. He wasn’t mean, he just treated me as any other droid, but he didn’t abuse me. I got to know his ship quite well. I grew to admire the stars while crawling around the outside of the ship before coming in from repairing stuff. He got a fixer upper slicer droid and had me fix it by myself. The personality core was shot, but I managed to get the body working. I enjoyed it when we visited a spaceport and I could mingle.

• Wookie master
o Bad master
 He treated me like I was just a hard drive on wheels.
o Empire got tipped off he was helping the rebels
 He lost a droid during the attack, but got away.
o Rebels got tipped off he was selling them out
 I was backing up [downloading] his database and didn’t respond to the repair order as I was busy. Life support wend offline and I got in the escape pod before the main reactor blew

***THE FOLLOWING ARE ONLY SUGGESTIONS/OPINIONS***
Hi, I'm loving seeing your backstory come together. Don't worry about mechanical repairs as I have that covered with my pilot. I think a slicer would be an important element we are missing.

If you want to make an astromech R2-D2 was an excellent slicer. Since droids have the most flexibility with their base stats, I would recommend bringing intelligence and cunning up to 3, brawn and willpower to 2, and leave agility and presence at 1. That leaves you 35exp for talents. As a slicer, mechanic would be in the same career, costing only 10exp to add that spec tree.
